Empowering Global Youth Through Education
World University Service of Canada (WUSC) is a Canadian non-profit organization that works to expand access to education for young people affected by displacement and conflict. As one of the longest standing NGOs in Canada, WUSC operates in more than 15 countries and focuses on education, empowerment, and economic opportunity as long-term, sustainable responses to global inequality and forced displacement.
At UVic, WUSC operates through the Student Refugee Program (SRP), a unique peer-to-peer resettlement and education initiative run by student volunteers. Since 2025, the WUSC UVic Local Committee has been able to sponsor four undergraduate students from refugee backgrounds, covering the full cost of tuition, housing, food, and settlement support during their first year in Canada. Beyond financial support, student volunteers provide hands-on assistance with everything from airport pickup and housing applications to academic advising, healthcare registration, and social integration.

"For me, it was more than just volunteering—it was about building a family and creating a welcoming space for other students in the SRP. It gave me a chance to pass on the knowledge and experience I had gained during my first year"
